The Unassuming Star: Diane Keaton's SoulCycle Story
In a rare and exclusive interview, SoulCycle instructor Alba Verela shares her unique bond with the late Oscar-winning actress, Diane Keaton. A lifelong admirer of Keaton's, Verela's path crossed with the iconic actress in an unexpected way.
"It was like a dream come true," Verela reminisces. "I was teaching my regular SoulSurvivor class when the front desk staff whispered, 'Diane Keaton is in your class.' I was starstruck, to say the least!"
Verela, a 13-year veteran instructor, couldn't believe her luck. Keaton, a consistent rider, chose Verela's Saturday 10 a.m. class at the SoulCycle studio in Santa Monica, California, as her go-to workout.
"Every Saturday, without fail, Diane would be there. She was always the last one to leave, and her presence was so endearing," Verela shares.
But here's where it gets controversial... or rather, heartwarming. After each class, Keaton would make a point to thank Verela personally. "She would come up to me, right above my handlebars, and say, 'Thank you, Alba. I had so much fun.' It was so genuine and unexpected," Verela recalls.
Verela was touched by Keaton's kindness, especially given her celebrity status. "It's not often that you get such a personal interaction with a star. She made me feel seen and appreciated."
And this is the part most people miss: Keaton's choice of bike. She always rode bike 47, located in the back of the studio, right against a wall that blocked the view of other riders. "It was her spot," Verela explains. "She was very private and respectful of others' space."
Verela remembers Keaton's unassuming style: "She would wear a long-sleeved shirt, glasses, and always had her white towel around her neck."
When news of Keaton's passing broke, Verela was in shock. "Her words of appreciation are some of my most cherished memories. She was a star, but she made me feel like a star too."
What do you think? Is it the little things like this that make celebrities so endearing? Or is it something else entirely? We'd love to hear your thoughts in the comments!
