A concerning rise in measles cases has been reported in British Columbia, Canada, with 26 new infections confirmed in just one week. This spike in measles cases is a worrying development, especially considering the region's already high case count for the year.
The BC Centre for Disease Control (BCCDC) has confirmed these new cases, which all originated from the Northern Health Authority. This area, particularly its northeastern region, has seen a significant surge in measles infections, accounting for nearly 80% of all cases reported in 2025.
Dr. Brian Conway, a medical expert, expressed his disappointment over the recent spike. He believes the conditions in Northern B.C., with its colder climate and more confined indoor spaces, may contribute to the increased contagion. However, he emphasizes that the primary factor is likely the region's low vaccination rate.
"In northeastern British Columbia, before the outbreaks, we had vaccination rates as low as 50%, which is far below the 90% threshold needed to prevent community-based outbreaks," Conway explained. He further highlighted the importance of vaccination in preventing the transmission of measles, hoping that this recent surge serves as another cautionary tale.
While Alberta and Ontario have also experienced outbreaks, with 1,917 and 2,371 cases respectively between October 2024 and October 2025, Ontario's outbreak was declared over last month.
