A staggering 17.4% of households across the European Union struggle to make ends meet, a stark reminder of the economic challenges faced by many. The latest edition of Key Figures on European Living Conditions, published in September, sheds light on the diverse realities of life in Europe. This comprehensive report covers a wide range of topics, from income inequality to childcare and health, offering a holistic view of European living standards.
In 2024, nearly one in five EU households (17.4%) found it difficult or very difficult to manage their finances. Conversely, a slightly larger proportion (26.0%) reported having no trouble at all. The remaining households (56.6%) fell somewhere in between, managing their finances with varying degrees of ease.
When we group these responses into two categories - those facing difficulties and those not - we find that a significant 41.6% of EU households experienced at least some financial strain in 2024.
This publication, Key Figures on European Living Conditions, is an invaluable resource for understanding the EU's economic landscape and comparing living standards across EU and EFTA countries. For a deeper dive into other aspects of the EU's performance, explore the other Key Figures publications.
