COVID Vaccine Access 2025: What You Need to Know Despite CDC Changes | RFK Jr. Impact (2025)

Despite RFK Jr.'s antics, COVID vaccine access will remain similar to last year's situation

In an interview with Ars Technica, Brigid Groves, vice president of professional affairs for the American Pharmacists Association (APhA), expressed concern about efforts to restrict access to COVID-19 vaccines. The APhA, a prominent organization representing pharmacists, is worried about these limitations because the available data and evidence strongly indicate that the vaccine is both safe and effective for young, otherwise healthy individuals.

Groves emphasized, "We are concerned about that because the data and evidence point to the fact that this vaccine is safe and effective for [young, otherwise healthy] patients. So, to suddenly arbitrarily limit that is very concerning to us."

Pharmacies, including CVS and Walgreens, have taken a permissive approach to vaccine access. Representatives from both companies confirmed that they do not require patients under 65 to provide proof of underlying medical conditions to receive a COVID-19 vaccine. CVS and Walgreens will not ask for self-attestation of conditions, ensuring that patients can easily obtain the vaccine.

Amy Thibault, a CVS spokesperson, stated, "In simplest terms, if a patient wants to get the vaccine, they’ll get it."

The process of shared decision-making may involve additional forms outlining risks and benefits, which could take a few extra minutes. However, overall, the vaccine access process is expected to be similar to previous years.

This reporter successfully booked same-day appointments for updated COVID-19 vaccines at local CVS and Walgreens pharmacies in North Carolina without needing to attest to any medical conditions.

Regarding children, the situation might be more complex. While adults and older children can conveniently receive vaccinations at pharmacies, younger children, especially those under age 5, may face challenges. Pharmacists typically do not administer vaccines to this age group, and parents will need to visit the pediatrician for vaccination.

Pediatricians, similar to pharmacists, are likely to support broad access to the vaccines. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) has advocated for universal access to the vaccines. The AAP specifically encourages vaccination for children under age 2 and those with underlying conditions, as they are at higher risk of severe disease.
